there are some mornings when the sky looks like a road

Epidemic?

A few months ago I saw this little sign while out on a walk around Roslindale/West Roxbury with my mother.

Today, via Universalhub.com, I came across this photo of a similar sign taken in Cambridge.

I just felt it was worth noting… and saying “EW”. I generally like to pretend the, uh… dog droppings in the neighborhood are from stray dogs — for some reason, it makes me feel better than thinking people are just inconsiderate — but ain’t no stray dogs I know (not that I know many stray dogs) that can put their own crap in someone’s trash bin or (and this is even more disgusting to me) up on somebody’s fence post.

Actually, I sort of hope there are stray dogs out there that can do the latter. Because that would just be cool. Gross, but cool.

Baker’s To-Do List

I like making lists of things I want to bake/cook… even though I never really get around to them. Hopefully that’s not the case with the following items, because YUM.

  • Crème Brûlée Cupcakes
  • Car-Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Pasta with Feta Cheese
  • And these aren’t exactly baked goods, but “recipes” I’d love to try out.

  • Homemade Deodorant
  • Homemade Lip Gloss
  • Though, for those last two, I’d have to find some affordable shea butter, cocoa butter, almond oil, etc. There’s a third-party Amazon seller that carries those things, but they aren’t cheap *and* the shipping costs nearly as much as each item does. The grocery stores around here might be a bit of a long shot for that stuff, but I might as well check anyway.

    New theme… again.

Title says it all: new theme! The header is a picture I took myself at Newfound Lake in New Hampshire, and the lyrics under the header are from Joanna Newsom because I am not feeling creative enough to come up with my own “tagline” at the moment.

Some time this week (or… this month!) I’ll try to add the pictures I’ve taken this summer to the image rotator on the index page of the site.

I can’t believe I never realized “rotator” was a palindrome before.

    Garlic “Grilled” Cheese

2 slices of bread + garlic powder + toaster = garlic toast.

Garlic toast + butter + 2 slices of cheese + 10-15 seconds in the microwave = DELICIOUS SANDWICH.

    Yay, Accomplishment!

The baby blanket is finished. Or almost finished, I just need to weave in the ends, but for the most part it’s finally *done*. I say “finally” because I’ve been working on it for a while, and yet it only took me the last day and a half to polish off the last half of the project… so mostly, it was a lack of motivation on my part keeping me from getting it done sooner.

I nearly had a panic attack when I was binding off, though. I was using a double crochet bind off (for looms) and before I started binding off I realized I wouldn’t have enough yarn (figures, right?) so I tied the end to a new ball and carried on. Except when I got to the knot, I unintentionally crocheted with the wrong strand — one of the ends rather than the working yarn. Luckily, I only did so for two chains before I caught my mistake and was able to continue on with the working yarn without it looking too odd.

I can understand why Lion Brand Velvetspun was discontinued, though. It sheds like mad and is generally not the easiest to work with. I’m not sure I’d use it again for a bigger project like a blanket, but since I pretty much bought all I could at both AC Moore and JoAnn Fabrics when I heard it was being discontinued, I’ll have to use it up on some smaller projects. I’m already planning on making a hat to match the blanket, which should come along a lot more quickly than the blanket did because a) I’ve made hats before and b) it’s a baby hat, they’re tiny!

All in all, not too shabby for the first blanket I’ve ever made. I’ll take some pictures soon, once the ends are woven in and whatnot.
